Pose of the Week: Warrior 1

This Thursday, Mama moon will be at her fullest glory in the sign of Aries. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. It is a warrior sign of individuality, passion, fire, and leadership. In honor of this beautiful energy illuminated by the full moon, this week's pose is Warrior 1.


But before we go any further, I have a question for you...


What are you a warrior of?


Reflect on that question this week. Aries folks have a strong sense of self; they know who they are and what they believe in. What about you? What are you willing to fight for? Truth? Love? Creation? Manifestation?


For me, I'm choosing to be a warrior of compassion this week: compassion for myself, for my loved ones, for my dog, for strangers, for all of the living world around me. I will fight through anxiety and negative thoughts to bring compassion to all situations. When I make a mistake, I'm not going to beat myself up over it. If I come across an insecurity, I will let go of negative self-talk and be more understanding. I will remember I'm human and I'm trying. Compassion helps me get through the toughest of times and conversations. I am proud to wield it!


With that, let's get into it!


As with all of the poses I'll share, you are welcome to take them on or off the mat. For Warrior 1, you'll want a flat surface (do not do this pose in bed, please!) and enough space to extend your legs into a lunge.


Begin standing at the top of your mat or floor. Extend your right leg behind you, allowing your foot to land at a 45-degree angle. Press the outer edge of your right foot into the ground. Bend at your left knee to sink into the pose.


Raise your arms up and overhead. Take note of your shoulders: are they inching towards your ears? Lower them and send a loving breath to any areas you feel stiffness. Breathing in movement and energy. Breathing out any tension you've been holding.


Now, imagine you are holding a bright, luminous full moon - widening the distance between your hands and stretching your upper back body.


Take 5 deep breathes here, sinking deeper into the pose with each exhale. Come back to the question of the week: what are you a warrior of? Affirm to yourself that you are a warrior, and feel the strength and honor that exists in the word warrior.


Lower your arms. Bring your right foot up to meet your left and switch sides. As you repeat the flow on your left side, can you take note of any differences between the two sides of your body?


We'll end this brief practice by giving thanks to your body and to yourself. It's not always easy to find the time to connect with yourself, and you've done it. I am so thankful that you're here with me.
